Bahia

Bahia is a state in the north-east of Brazil. Bahia’s capital city, Salvador, is located on the coast where the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of All Saints meet. Bahia is an archaic form of the Portuguese word for ‘Bay’. Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvarez Cadral landed at Bahia in 1500 and claimed the territory for Portugal. Bahia has a tropical climate, a forest on the Atlantic coast and a chain of mountains running from north to south. It is not surprising that ships heading for Rio de Janeiro in 1836 (to take on provisions) would come into sight of Bahia, about 1000 kilometres to Rio’s north.
