Portland Bill lighthouse

Portland is located on the south coast of England, in Dorset. It is an island joined to the mainland by a tombolo (a sand spit that joins two pieces of land). Portland Bill is located at the southern end of the island and the Portland Bill Lighthouse is situated there. It is likely that this lighthouse, which was commissioned in the early eighteenth century, was the source of the reference to ‘the Portland light’.
