Simon’s Town

Simon’s Town (or Simon’s Bay as the town was called by the journal writers) is a small town on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated in Simon’s Bay which is part of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula.  In the early 1800s the town became a Royal Naval Base and was home to the South Atlantic squadron – around this time a breakwater was built providing the harbor with protection from swells. These factors helped it to acquire an atmosphere reminiscent of English ports.
