St Antonio

Santo Antonio is on Maio Island in the Portuguese Cape Verde archipelago. It is a small village located in the dry, barren lands in the north-east of the island about 35 kilometres from the capital, Vilo do Inglês. Santo Antonio is named after Saint Anthony, the Portuguese Franciscan monk who became patron saint of lost items, the poor and travellers. ‘Maio’ is the Portuguese word for ‘May’, and it was on 1 May 1460 that Portuguese explorers Diego Gomes and Antonio de Noli discovered the island. Vilo do Inglês means ‘English port’, so named because it was common for English ships to call there for supplies.
