Trinidad is the southernmost island in the Caribbean Sea, situated just 11 kilometres off northeast Venezuela and South America. When Christopher Columbus landed in 1498 he named it La Isla de la Trinidad (The Island of the Trinity). It is the larger of the two islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad has a marine tropical climate, three mountain ranges and numerous rivers and streams.
