[pages torn from journal] … from what appears to be the mouth of a river but Colonel Light not liking to take the Brig in nearer without knowing the depth of water has just despatched the gig to sound. During today’s run at a distance of from three to five miles from the shore our soundings have varied from three to seven fathoms. We are now lying in five fathoms at 7 p.m. The gig has returned without having found a passage to the mouth of the river – the day being too far gone to admit of a further search this evening. Tomorrow a party is going to reconnoitre in the surveying boat.
