Falmouth

Falmouth is a port in Cornwall in south-west England. It is located at the mouth of the River Fal, hence its name. The origin of the name ‘Fal’, however, is unknown. Falmouth Harbour is the third deepest natural harbour in the world. Being the most south-westerly safe anchorage in England, Falmouth Harbour was often the first port of call for Royal Navy ships returning to England. Between 1689 and 1851 a packet service operated out of Falmouth, its ships delivering mail throughout the British Empire.
