Gold Coast

The Gold Coast was a former colony of Great Britain located on the Gulf of Guinea on the west coast of Africa. On gaining its independence in 1957 the nation renamed itself, ‘Ghana’. In 1471, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in the area. Subsequently English, Dutch, Danish, Prussian and Swedish traders were attracted to the region, not least because of its large gold resources. They referred to the area as the ‘Gold Coast’.
