Porto-Santo

The correct name is ‘Porto Santa’. Porto Santa Island is a Portuguese island situated 43 kilometres north-east of Madeira Island. It is the northernmost and easternmost island of the Madeira Archipelago. Porto Santa has two distinctly different terrains: there are mountains in the northeast and a plain in the southwest that features a nine-kilometre long beach. The name ‘Porto Santa’ means ‘Holy Port’ in English and is related to its discovery by sailors who sheltered there during a storm in 1418. The sailors saw their salvation as a case of divine intervention, hence the name.
