Portsmouth

The city of Portsmouth is a long-standing Royal Navy port that is located on the island of Portsea on the south coast of England. It is in Hampshire, 64 miles (103 kilometres) south-west of London. A narrow creek separates the island from the mainland and the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour is protected by the Isle of Wight to its south. It is likely that the name ‘Portsmouth’ is derived from the Roman fortress, the Portus Ordurni, which was located at nearby Portchester and was where the Romans based their British fleet. Portsmouth means ‘the mouth of the Portus harbour’.
