Thursday 24 November 1836

[, on board the wrote. | Read source notes.]

Thursday Nov. 24. This morning a whale that had been playing
about at some distance came alongside the ship & after surveying it
with much deliberation, quietly returned to two companions who were
spouting further off: we suppose that he reported us not worth the
trouble of coming to see, as they all continued their gambols without
making a nearer approach. I was disappointed in the size of this
leviathan, but was told that it was very small not above 40 feet long.
