[, on board the wrote.]

This evening the setting sun was remarkably brilliant, sometimes resembling a burning volcano, and then softening down to a variety of colours of the most delicate tints. The reflection on the water was most beautiful. As I was often on the deck early in the morning I had more than once an opportunity of witnessing the rising of that glorious luminary, which, when observed at sea especially, is splendid beyond description. About 11 o’clock at night several whales came about the ship, spouting up water, and playing their gambols.
